Rally

Rally? What is that?

Every year, CVR hosts dozens of high quality events each year put on by truly dedicated volunteers. These events include all of the best activities you’d expect out of a top notch car club. Many of the events focus on the driver or car (which is kind of the point in a car club). What is not as common is an event that focuses on team work, problem solving and has nothing to do with physical ability or horsepower. CVR actually offers just such an event; Rally.

CVR’s motto (and PCA’s) is “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”. While we still enjoy driving our beautiful machines down amazing routes throughout the region, Rally focuses on the people part. Rally is the only competitive team based activity in CVR. In Rally, a team of driver and navigator work together to find the correct course as designed by the Rallymasters. Rally comes in two forms; TSD and Gimmick.

In TSD Rally, the participants are trying to follow the correct route and arrive at a precise time without being early or late. This requires regulating speed based on the route and requires strong communication between driver and navigator. TSD is the more traditional form of Rally.

In Gimmick Rally, timing is not paramount (although there is a max time limit). The goal in a Gimmick Rally is to find the correct route but there are tricks and traps built into the route instructions. The participants navigate the event based on a rules set which explain how to interpret the instructions. Think of Gimmick Rallies as a puzzle or problem solving challenge. Currently in CVR, we focus exclusively on Gimmick Rallies.

Rally is unique in that it is focused on communication and team work. Rally is a family friendly event that parents can do together with their kids. Many people bring their 4 door Porsches and bring the whole family!

…of the different regions’ websites, only 54 regions make any mention of Rally; only about 37%

In addition to being dissimilar to most other car events, it is also a fairly rare event within the greater PCA community. There are roughly 146 regions in PCA. From a quick review of the different regions’ websites, only 54 regions make any mention of Rally; only about 37%. This fact is highlighted because it is something different and special that CVR offers to its membership.

If you are wondering how to get started in Rally, you are in luck! In 2019, we offered our first Rally Academy. This event was extremely popular selling out in just 1 day! We had 13 teams in our first offering. We intentionally kept the class size small so that everyone could ask questions and make sure they got the most out of the event. The event includes discussions, Q&A and an abbreviated version of a Rally with all the answers. As of the writing of this article, 4 of the 13 teams signed up for the 2019 Fall Rally. We intend to run another Rally Academy in 2020 so keep an eye for details in the coming months.

Rally is easy to learn and dynamic enough to keep the most advance teams challenged. We run 2 Rallies a year and have roughly 25 teams at each outing. We look forward to seeing you in the future at either the Rally Academy or at one of our semi-annual events.
