Monthly Meeting – March 2020

The mild spring weather predicted a great turnout at one of the year’s most popular monthly meetings at Automobile Associates of Canton, CT. Over 150 members attended with many exercising their Porsches for the first time after a long winter hibernation. The threat of COVID-19 loomed over the event but who could have predicted that it was going to be the last monthly meeting for a long while? Nonetheless, it was a pleasure to be among friends looking at an array of Porsches in their many stages of work at their shop. And, as expected, Jim and his team put out a terrific spread of food, drink, and tasty desserts.

The meeting began with Phil talking about CVR PCA business which included previews of upcoming events, unfortunately, all of which have now all been postponed indefinitely or cancelled altogether as a result of social distancing measures. Due to the fluid situation, we urge all members to please make sure CVR has your current email address so you can be notified of our activities. In addition visit our website and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for information on upcoming events.

The keynote speaker was Jim himself and he walked us through a presentation of some of the more recent restoration ‘horror stories’ he has witnessed first hand. Jim showed us that some cars may look great on the outside but it’s not until you begin to ‘peel back the onion’ that you discover how badly botched some previous repairs or restorations have been. In fact, some of the cars he discussed were in the shop for all attendees to look at up close. To quote Jim “…despite what some people may think Bondo is not structural”. He went on to detail the extent to which repairs were needed and the fact that his team can correct these past mistakes and give these beautiful cars a new life is a testament to his technicians’ skills and artistry. The moral of the story: “Buyer beware”!

With the CVR business and presentations complete it was time for our raffle. Attendees eagerly anticipated hearing their number called as the tickets were drawn. Some of the raffle prizes were free CVR name tags, so how ironic it was to call none other than Lynn Keller up (CVR Name Tag Coordinator) and present her with a free name tag! I wonder how many she now has? Congratulations to all the winners! Again, we would like to thank Jim and his entire staff for hosting the event. Let’s hope that things improve soon and everyone stays safe so we can all be together again at the next CVR Monthly Meeting.
