View from the Valley – March 2019

The 2019 planning meeting was held on Saturday, January 12th and the activity chairs presented their plans for the year ahead.  The 60th year of CVR is packed with events and the CVR website calendar has been updated with all the events discussed at the meeting.   We will publicize additional events as they come up throughout the year using email blasts, the website calendar and Challenge.  Check the website calendar for last minute changes.

Be sure that you have signed up for the club’s email blasts.  This will ensure you receive the latest info on new events and also late breaking news on event changes.  You will also receive emails on how to register for the Monthly Meetings using the Constant Contact registration form.

This winter certainly has lived up to Mark Twain’s observation of “If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes” and could be amended to change the word “weather” with “season”.  Seems like we have transitioned from winter to spring and back again a few time so far this year.

We did have a beautiful sunny day for the first Monthly Meeting of the year that was hosted by The Trailer Depot, in North Haven, CT.  A special Thank You to Mike Duhamel and his team for welcoming us and putting on a fantastic event.   We were treated to pancakes from Chip’s Pancake Truck, always a good thing.  You could feel the enthusiasm of the members and the anticipation of when our Porsches will be coming out of hibernation.  Thanks also to the Programs Team of VP Jeff Coe assisted by Joe Morrow and welcome to new Programs team member Alex Lendvai.

Though we are on the verge of the driving season, there are some early season activities to note:

The Driver Education Winter Workshop Car Control at Lime Rock Park on February 23rd gives the participants an opportunity to experience multiple car control drills, with sideline coaching and learn about under-steer and over-steer.  At the time I am writing this, there is some snow forecasted between now and the event.  That should increase the fun factor!

The Member Activity Sampler is planned for Saturday, April 6th.   This event is open to all members who want to get a better understanding of the club activities available to them.  There will be representatives for each club activity that you can converse with and have your questions answered.

The preparations for the CVR Club Race scheduled for April 26-27th have been well underway since before the New Year and are proceeding full speed ahead.  CVR has hosted a club race at Lime Rock Park every year since the start of PCA Club Racing in 1992.  Lime Rock will be the destination for PCA Club Racers from around the United States.  Consider volunteering, since the volunteers are a key ingredient in making our Club Race possible.

I would like to conclude this month’s article with an update on the Challenge Transformation.   This task is at the forefront of the CVR board’s focus for 2019.   We have formed a team consisting of Jeff Coe, Shelley Krohnengold, Don Phelan, Eric Richmond and myself.  We started by speaking with other PCA regions about their experience on this topic.  The majority have already transitioned from a physical publication to an electronic version, or moving in that direction.  We heard stories very similar to CVR where the publication and distribution costs have increased to the point of not being sustainable.  The team presented to the board a plan to publish the Challenge content on the CVR website.  We will also use email blasts to publicize when new Challenge content is available.  The team will continue to further develop the plan to implement the transition to the electronic version of Challenge.  As always please do not hesitate to contact myself, the team members or any board member with your comments or concerns.   We realize that this is a significant change for the club and will do our best to develop a product that our members can be proud of.

Safe travels.
