Driver’s Education – August 2019

CVR DE was back on track at Lime Rock Park on July 15th for a Monday full-day event, with perfect weather.  We seemed to have timed it perfectly (by pure luck) with the temps in the low 80’s. Just days later, the Northeast entered a heatwave, with temps in the 90’s and even the 100’s.

The Green rungroup lined up to go out on track

Our DE day was a full-day (not shared), running at max capacity for the Green and Yellow rungroups, which were once again sold out.   The other groups were close to max capacity.  It’s always great seeing the first time DE participants at an event – they are eager to drive, a little apprehensive and can’t stop smiling by days end.

CVR has seen many new faces/first time DE participants this year, which is why if you want to do a DE you need to register online the day the event registration opens up (on ClubRegistration.net).  If you don’t want to get left out in the cold (on the Waiting List), sign up early.  Our August LRP DE is sold out (again) for the Green and Yellow rungroups and we are still more than a week away from the event.

Along with new DE drivers, it’s always great to see friends come back to our events.  Some drivers may have taken some time off from DE due to family or work, but they just couldn’t stay away.  And it’s good to hear from them that they are so happy they came back and were welcomed by all of the people that they had met at past events.   Not only do our DE drivers have fun on the track, but they also meet new people, some becoming long-time friends.

Once you get a taste for DE it’s hard to stay away from it.  From the first time to your 20th time and beyond, it becomes an addiction where you can go from D.O.T. tires to R Compound tires, from stock seats to race seats, from factory-installed seatbelts to harnesses, and then a trailer (and maybe a Cayenne to tow the trailer), all the way to a full-on race car.   Whoa – I need to slow it down.  DE is a lot of fun with a totally stock street car for as long as you want to do track days, but don’t say I didn’t warn you about being hooked by the track bug.

Driving your car in a controlled and educational environment with people who have the same interests as you is just awesome.  CVR DE still has a few 2019 DE opportunities remaining. For those of you who are still thinking of participating in your first DE or for those of you who might have taken some time off and want to come back to drive with our great group of people, just register.   Of course, I know our regular drivers already have the events on their calendars, just waiting for the days to go by until they are back on track.  Check out our events on the CVR calendar or on ClubRegistration.net.

Our July track day was fun for all, wrapping up with an end-of-the-day social Pizza gathering, organized by our food-master, Todd Pajonas.   We went through those stacked boxes of pizza like we hadn’t eaten in days.   It’s hard work out there on the track and everyone was happy to feed their stomachs before heading home.

For our advanced drivers (White, Black, and Red), we have an Advanced DE at Watkins Glen on Monday/Tuesday, October 7/8.   Registration opens on August 28 and you can set up a reminder on ClubRegistration.net. You will receive an email that morning, to remind you to register.   There are only 50 garage spaces so if you want a space, you know the deal … register early.   We’ve held this advanced DE for the past few years and it is hugely popular.   We run a two rungroup event so there is a ton of track time for all of the drivers.  If you’ve done the event in the past, you probably already have it on your calendar.   If you haven’t done the event and you are an Advanced driver, this is a ‘not to be missed’ event.

The season is more than half-way over, but there are still DE events to attend, all the way until our final event in November.   I look forward to seeing you at the track.

Be safe, have fun and remember, gas is glue.
