View from the Valley – August 2019

In our 60th year as a club, we have 70 events on our calendar that cover the range of activities that PCA has to offer. I have tried my best to attend as many events as I could so far this year and hope that you have done the same. As always each event I was able to attend was run to the high standards we come to expect.

Attending the CVR Concours with its impressive display of Porsches was a great opportunity to meet and chat with some CVR friends that I haven’t seen in a while. Thank you to co-chairs Mike Keller and Rob Keller and the team of volunteers for putting on another great Concours.

I haven’t had the opportunity to attend a Rally so far this year but I want to thank Christine and Tim Beckwith for the work they do to make this activity a success. Between attending the Zone 1 president’s meetings and involvement with the Porsche Parade, I have had the opportunity to hear what other regions are doing. To date, I have not heard of any region doing a Rally Academy so I think it is safe to say it is probably a unique event in PCA. Based on the response from our members it was a success and greatly appreciated.

One event that Maria and I have been volunteering at for the past few years is the Porscheplatz at the IMSA races at Lime Rock. We were at the Porsche Parade instead since the events overlapped this year. We thought the weather Boca Raton in July (90 to 92 degrees and 75-degree dewpoints) would top the weather in Connecticut but we were wrong. I certainly appreciate the volunteers who persevered through the extremely hot weather and made the event a success.

Lynn Friedman who is the PCA Porscheplatz coordinator came to the Porsche Parade after the IMSA race. She made a point to seek us out and commend the excellent job the CVR team did.

In the category of truth is stranger than fiction. Part of the Porsche Parade is the Parade of Porsches. The Parade of Porsches occurs on the last day of Parade. It involves 200 to 300 Porsches doing a drive around the area, in this case, Boca Raton. When the organizer went to the Boca City Hall to work on the logistics, they had to pull a permit for the “parade”. Some of the info on the permit was how many marching bands and parade floats will you have. Needless to say, there was a disconnect in understanding that was resolved. The next problem is that per city regulations they are only 3 parades allowed a year and they didn’t want to lose one of the 3 parade instances. The solution was to rename the “Parade of Porsches” to “Procession of Porsches”
