Between the Lines – February 2020

Challenge – Now there’s an app for that, too.

Two weeks ago, the CVR Board formally met for the first time since October for the Club’s 2020 planning meeting. As Challenge Editor, my presentation was fairly straightforward: I talked last year’s efforts to transform Challenge from a print magazine to a digital “e-zine” and what this years editorial calendar looks like.

I also talked a little bit about our upcoming app.

I’m happy to announce the long-rumoured Challenge App is done. No other region or zone has one. Even PCA National is behind us. CVR members who attended the first meeting of 2020 at Trailer Depot this past Saturday were treated to some fabulous pancakes from Chips and a live demonstration of the Challenge app.

Very. Cool. Stuff.

The Challenge app is not a “native app” which means you can’t get it in the Itunes or Google Play stores. Rather it’s what’s referred to as a PWA or Progressive Web App. PWAs look and function the same way as a native app, but a PWA is built off the web site code. It also means we don’t have to go through the time and expense of getting it certified by Google or Apple.

The Challenge app works on your Apple or Android device and it works on your smartphone and/or tablet. Download and setup are simple and fast, and once installed, the app downloads content in the background so it’s always available. Even if you’re in an area without cell service. Just tap the icon on your screen to load Challenge. Even better, you’ll always know when new content is ready – any time a new article or photo gallery is published to Challenge, you should see a number in the top right corner of the icon.

If you’re on an Android device, just click on this link (https://cvrpca.com). When the box at the bottom of the screen comes up and asks if you’d like to add the app to your phone, say yes. Once downloaded, you can move the icon to your phone’s home screen. If you’re on an iPhone, you have to follow a few more steps which I’ve outlined here.

We are always looking for feedback. Your comments, suggestions and criticisms are what drives us to make this a better and more useful product for our members.
