Since we haven’t been able to run our normal Rally events, we decided to do something a little different. Just in time for the July 4th holiday, we have created the “Ice Cream Social Distancing Rally”.
This event is a “Photos and Questions only” Rally where participants navigate between local ice cream shoppes whilst winding through some of the best driving roads in Connecticut.
This is a great opportunity to get a taste of Rally for CVR members who have never tried it.
How it works
This is an entirely self-service Rally which can be performed at any time between July 3 and July 18. Take it as slow or as fast (within the limits) as you like. Run the course over again on another day if you missed something. It’s totally up to you. Just make sure to submit your answer sheets to us at Rally@cvrpca.org by the end of July 18.
- Starting Location: Dunkin Donuts – 144 Meriden Road, Middlefield, CT 06455
- Ending Location: Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tale – 1301 Boston Post Road, Madison CT 06443

Participants will be provided with a set of photos of places you will encounter along the Rally route. When you find the position and location shown in the photo, watch for the next traffic sign on the right-hand side of the Rally route and mark it on your score sheet. This is how we know that you found it. There are a total of 12 photos and each photo properly ID’d is worth 4 points.
Participants will also be asked to answer questions about signs or landmarks that you see along the route. There are a total of 14 questions and each question is worth 2 points.
For this Rally we will be giving you the entire route with no “Gimmicks” or tricks. In addition to providing the details of the entire route, we are also making available the turn by turn navigation route through RideWithGPS.
This is the same app used by Tours and many of you may already have it. Simply download the app and when we send the registration email, we will include instructions for downloading the route. You will then have the exact route just like your normal GPS. The RideWithGPS app can be downloaded on the Apple or Android app stores.
Checkpoints
Since this Rally is entirely self-service, we won’t be able to do traditional checkpoints. But just because we have to social distance doesn’t mean we can’t be social. Instead, we have substituted in “Selfie Checkpoints“.
There are 4 checkpoints along the route; 3 at Ice Cream Shoppes and one at the ending location. Simply snap a photo of you with your driver/navigator at each of the checkpoints outlined in the route instructions. Make sure to include your beautiful car as well!
Send in your photos with your score sheet to get 10 points per checkpoint. We will be posting some of the best ones to CVR social media including our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, with the hashtag #Rally4IceCream.

Registration
There are no real costs for putting on this event so we will not be charging an event fee. In order to participate, you will still need to register. As always with Rally, registration will take place on Motorsportreg.com at the following link:
msreg.com/Rally4IceCream
Registration will open on July 1 and will run until July 18 if you want to register and run on the last day. Once you register, we will send the photos, instructions and score sheet.
While it saddens us that we won’t get to see everyone until our event in September, hopefully this provides everyone with a long overdue dose of Rally. Look forward to seeing everyone’s score sheets and good luck!
