July 6: POSTPONED Housatonic Railroad Coffee Run

July 6, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Postponed until July 27, due to poor weather conditions.
Starting Point: Gather at Union Station in Canaan, CT for a morning kick-off. You’ll find coffee, restrooms, and gasoline within easy reach. Drivers’ meeting is at 8:00 a.m. with wheels rolling by 8:30 a.m.
Route Overview: The drive will be a delightful blend of history, views, and roads, tracing, as closely as pavement permits, the path of the original Housatonic Railroad from Union Station to Danbury Station. This railroad, chartered during the 1836 railroad boom, once connected all the quaint towns along Route 7 and is still echoed in the landscape and stations.
Stops Along the Way:
Falls Village: Brief stop to admire the historic station.
West Cornwall: Known for its picturesque covered bridge—a perfect photo op!
Cornwall Bridge: Pause to appreciate the old station’s charm by the river.
Connecticut Antique Machinery Museum: Pause to see it’s few steam trains.
Kent: Here we’ll take a longer coffee break and stretch our legs.
Merwinsville and New Milford: Quick stops to photograph the historic stations.
Final Destination: Danbury Railway Museum. Here we’ll conclude our journey with a visit to this iconic station, featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train. Plan for a fascinating exploration of rail history and restored trains with rides on the hour.  Optional lunch at the historic Sycamore Drive-in, in its 75th year!
Drive Time: Approximately 1:30 hours of actual driving, with a total of about 2:30 hours including all stops. Add additional time for those who wish to thoroughly explore the Danbury Railway Museum.
Returning Home: Participants can choose their return path individually, with suggestions for scenic or direct routes available.
More details to follow as we get closer to the event date.  Prepare your cameras and get ready for a journey back in time along one of Connecticut’s historical lifelines!
