June 2019 Monthly Meeting

CVR drives for Spooner House

Dan Jacob’s made it clear to me when we first ran into each other during the June Monthly meeting. “Jeff,” he said, “Who is our featured speaker tonight?”  I knew where he was going with this so I made sure to respond correctly, “No speaker tonight Dan, this is social event!”. Looking at the smile on Dan’s face I knew I got the answer correct. You see, in addition to hosting one of the primary community service event’s of the CVR annual calendar Dan wants to make sure that the CVRers get together at a fun event and mingle. He wants everyone to have a great time and meet someone new while supporting this great charitable event. And that we did.

With spring coming to a close and summer around the corner the CVRers made their annual pilgrimage to the June monthly meeting at Hairy Dog Garage. The weather was perfect again this year, not too hot, not too cold, and with such great weather the CVRers jumped into their Porsches and set out for an evening of socialization, food, and support. It was no surprise that we had over 150 members in attendance, a great showing for sure.

The Hairy Dog Garage is located right on route 67 in Southbury. If you haven’t yet visited you owe it to yourself to check the location out. The facility is amazing with a full shop to service every need for your Porsche. Dan, Baron, George, and the HDG team had everything set up for our meeting including the “revival tent” and the grilles were fired up for a fantastic picnic dinner of delicious burgers and dogs. Everyone enjoyed a great meal and the expected socialization.

However, our main attraction for the evening was our annual food-drive for Spooner house and the CVRers delivered in spades yet again. With each member’s arrival came yet another bag full of food donations. The donation table was overflowing with food before you knew it. Susan, Sheryl, Alex, George, and I had our hands full as we handled the donations and gave out raffle tickets. The donations were VERY generous and by the end of the night we had given out over 1,000 raffle tickets. Fantastic job CVR!!! You guys make us proud!

A delicious picnic dinner behind us, CVR members took their seats so we could conduct a quick business review. Vice-president Allen Fossbender handled the task for the evening and the CVR event chairs went through the always-busy CVR calendar. After concluding the review we handed the mic over to the CVR Community Service chair Susan Young. Susan brought Spooner house Executive Director Susan Agamy forward to talk about the organization. Susan shared a Spooner house success story and everyone was touched by the great work that they do in helping others who are going through difficult times in their lives.  Susan Young then presented Spooner house with an “extra” large donation of $1,000 from CVR. Dan also shared a story of a racer he had met at the Glen who had sent a check for $1,000 for Dan to donate to a favorite charity. These funds were on their way to Spooner house as well. Combined with all the donated food and over $200 in cash that was collected by CVR it was an amazing night for all involved.

With the CVR business and presentation complete it was time for our raffle. HDG had stepped up and donated some very generous raffle prizes which included gift certificates for service.  Attendees eagerly anticipated hearing their number called as the tickets were drawn with lucky members walking away with a raffle prize.  Congratulations to all the winners!

With the raffle complete the evening concluded. The event was a rousing success for all involved, especially those in need at Spooner House but we had one big task in front of us. We had to load the truck with the food donations! You can see by the photo that this task was barely met as there was not a fraction of space left in Susan’s vehicle. She almost had to take two trips but this was a great problem to have. Special thanks to Dan Jacobs and the Hairy Dog crew for hosting and donating the raffle prizes but the big thanks goes to you, the CVR members, for your generous support of our food drive. You made it a success and it is much appreciated. We’ll see you at the next monthly meeting.  Please be sure to register using your constant contact invitation.

Thanks, your CVR Programs crew.
