Southern Berkshire Coffee Run – June 28, 2020

All week the weathermen were calling for rain on Sunday.

We got several emails, texts, and phone calls questioning if we were going to run our event. My typical reply was, “no hail or snow and we’re on.” On Saturday afternoon, in the middle of a rainstorm, I called John and the first words out of his mouth were, “you don’t want to cancel do you?”

My reply, NO WAY.

We woke up Sunday morning to a nice day. Considering our current social situation this coffee run took some creative planning.

To limit contact, Phil came up with and implemented the idea of one waiver per car. Allen Fossbender arrived with extra masks in case anyone forgot theirs and what appeared to be enough hand sanitizer to not only disinfect everyone there but the inside and outside of their cars as well. Our crowd was conscious and respectful of the situation.

Maybe it’s the fact that there weren’t any competing activities, people were just bored or the word got out, but we broke all of our previous attendance records and maybe those of the club as well, for a coffee run.

In all, 50+ cars arrived with about 75 club members and friends. We had attendees from as far as Old Saybrook to upstate New York thru the northern Berkshires.

We had quite an assortment of cars as well. Dr. Glen drove his all original “88”, 911 (with 240,000 miles), another arrived with his race-prepped 996, Mark with his GT3, a black 911 turbo, and everything in between.

Alan Davis offered to sweep which freed me from my usual duties. John led and I drove mid-pack to keep an eye on things in case our group became separated.

What an opportunity. To be able to drive your Porsche on eighty miles of the most beautiful scenic roads in the southern Berkshires, with only 3 stoplights grouped in the first few miles, accompanied by like-minded individuals.

The hidden gem of a coffee run is that the cars in front of you are literally sweeping the roads for hazards. Better than any road hazard app I know of.

We drove past 2 reservoirs, over a dam, alongside 2 rivers, and through some lovely state forests. We stopped at Papa’s in Otis, MA for gas and some conversation, then on to our final destination. We concluded our drive at The Ranch Country Club in Southwick, MA for lunch on the outdoor patio, overlooking the course or indoors if you wanted to avoid the sun. We didn’t see a drop of rain all day.

A good time was had by all and we hope you’ll join us on September 28th for our newly planned run around the Quabbin Reservoir.

Steve
