Between The Lines – May 2021

Welcome to the May edition of Challenge

For any CHALLENGE readers who have not been paying attention (yes, there are a few of you out there), this past weekend was the 2021 Club Race at Lime Rock. Thanks to the CVR’s move to a WordPress-based digital platform in 2019, CHALLENGE was able to provide live coverage of the race for both days, with qualifying, practice, and race results posted online within minutes of when they were officially certified. Complete Club Race coverage is available in the Club Race Program. You can access the Club Race section here or from the “Club Race” link in the menu at the top of every page on the website (see below). The 2021 Club Race digital program will be for the next 12 months until next year’s race. Just hover over the menu and you can see all of the available sections:

And speaking of race coverage, we have pictures. LOTS of pictures.  Thanks to the effort of the photo club (and some friends) we have start-to-finish coverage of the entire event. And new this year, we have video.  You can find links to all the pictures by clicking Photo Galleries in the menu and then clicking the link for the 2021 Club Race. More and more photos (and videos) are going up every day, so check back often.

This month’s CHALLENGE is packed. Besides the enormous number of photos, there are 13 articles or columns, so buckle up and let’s get started.

First off, let’s give credit to Mike Appel whose photo (unbeknownst to him) was selected for this month’s CHALLENGE cover. (Ed: No Mike, you don’t get an award for that.) Next, please read Allen Fossbender’s Straightaway column this month – Club Race wouldn’t have happened without the financial and trackside support of our sponsors and the hundreds of man (and woman) hours that were contributed by over 50 volunteers, and Allen pays homage to all of them.

There’s more. Jeff Coe announces this month’s virtual member meeting with special guest Lowell Paddock; there’s Dave Vaccaro’s article on the first on-track DE event of the year; Maria Capella’s update on this year’s jam-packed Coffee Run schedule; Paul Kudra’s article on driving an F1 (virtually) at Lime Rock; Paul Roth’s article about all of the amazing Club Race photos in our galleries; Joe Kunecki’s update on the CVR Store; Mike Keller’s announcement of the winners of the Winter/Spring virtual Concours, and an update from Christine and Tim Beckwith’s on this summer’s Rally plans.

There are also several Feature articles: Charles Young’s member profile of CVR Chief Instructor Chuck Veth; Walt Hyjek reminisces about the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s entry into the first-ever IMSA race and new contributor Joshua Zick’s surprising article on carbon offsets and auto racing.

And finally, before I forget, in case you’ve ever wondered how to get involved with your Club, there’s now a Help Wanted section on the website and in CHALLENGE. All the open volunteer (and staff) positions will be posted here going forward.  If you’d like to get involved, please check this out.

Remember, “It’s not just the cars…it’s the people.”

Enjoy

  1. For Eric Richmond.

Please email me at your earliest convenience. I’m going to start pushing once again for Suncoast Region Board to give me the go-ahead to drop the print version of our newsletter as you guys did a couple of years ago.

    Best,

    Norm Sippel
