Driver Education – Winter 2018

Wow – can you believe the 2018 CVR DE season has already come to an end? It feels like just yesterday when we were having our Winter Workshop at LRP. Time sure flies by. But, there is always next year for those of you who could not make it to an event this season.

Our October event at Watkins Glen was one for the books. We held the two-day event for Advanced drivers with a two rungroup schedule. Mother Nature cooperated, giving us two dry, warm days with just a little fog on the first morning. All of the drivers got their fill of the famous WGI track. I can safely say that the drivers were happily tired by the end of the second day.

We were able to secure last minute sponsorship for the t-shirt give-away from the support and generosity of our local shop owners: Speedsport Tuning, Daniel Jacobs LLC, Musante Motorsports and Automobile Associates of Canton. CVR members are so very fortunate to have these top-level facilities to choose from. They are all extremely professional at what they do, from a basic oil change, a full restoration, or building the ultimate car—street or track. These shops have seen it or done it so when you are planning your next service or anything Porsche, look up one of these premiere facilities. CVR thanks them for their support — and the drivers loved the shirts.

We had our annual WGI dinner after day one at the Harbor Hotel. The food was delicious and after everyone was full, we were treated to a class act magic show by Bruce Trigg. To say that he left all of us dumbfounded by the end of the evening is an understatement. We were amazed, we laughed and we were baffled. Bruce is a regular participant/instructor at our WGI events. He lives in Canada and his evening job is performing as a professional magician. He has performed for the likes of Sir Elton John, the Rolling Stones and even the Queen of England and now he can officially add to his list Connecticut Valley Porsche Club. His bookings are probably going to go through the roof. Bruce was so gracious to offer his time to CVR members for a private performance after the dinner. It was also very nice of his wife Aim to give up her evening when she could have instead had a night out at a fancy winery. We all thank Bruce so very much for the great evening. The drivers continued to talk about the magic show on Tuesday. How many times did I hear “where did the lemons come from?” or “how did those cards add up to those numbers?”

We had a great two days at the Glen and are already looking forward to next season. For those of you who did not make the event, boy, you really missed out on some fantastic track time along with the five star entertainment after the Monday dinner. Randy Cresci from Clutchfoto spent two days taking spectacular pictures.

With our last events being held on November 2 & 3, they fall after I have to send in this article. At the time of this article, our Green and Yellow rungroup slots were sold out. I hope this is a trend we continue to carry into the future. All of our beginner groups at LRP sold out for this year. It’s gratifying to see new drivers keep joining our sport since a lot of time and effort goes into planning and running each event.

I have to thank a few key volunteers by name: Mark Lewis, our DE Registrar, Dan Jacobs and Chris Musante for running our Tech Line, Magnus Evertson as Chief Steward, Susan for all of her contributions, David Nagler, our Chief Instructor, Rick Canter for running our instructor training program and of course, a giant thank you to all of our terrific instructors. I also have to thank all of our sponsors — the four shops mentioned earlier, Elm City Trailer, Hagerty Insurance, Lift Line/Car Lifts Plus, Automobilia, Stable Energies and Danbury Porsche.

We are already working on the schedule for next year so that you can all plan DE days first and other obligations second. As the dates get confirmed with a contract from each track, the events will be posted on ClubRegistration.net and the CVR website. I look forward to seeing you all at the track next year – remember to be safe and have fun.

See you on the track.

Dave
