Driver Education

The 2019 DE season is wrapping up but is not quite finished yet.

CVR’s 2019 DE season is just about over for us and that’s kind of sad because it’s been a great season.  But, it’s not all bad as some of us have depleted our tire & fuel budget for the year so the break gives us all a little time to prepare for next season’s DE events.  We will post the 2020 dates as soon as we have contracts, most likely in early January.

CVR’s 2019 season will end at Lime Rock Park on November 1 & 2.  Friday is for our advanced drivers, Saturday is for every rungroup.  As of this post I believe we have once again sold out all of our beginner groups for the Saturday DE.  Happily, the participation of our advanced rungroup drivers has gone up considerably and I think that is due to LRP letting us contract for full day Saturdays.

We hope that those of you who started doing DE this year value the helpful educational instruction you received on how to drive your Porsche (as compared to your Porsche driving you).  It is very challenging these days for an instructor to teach someone how to control / drive their new Porsche car, with the newer cars having so many different nanny controls.  It is hard to ignore the fact that the safety net built into these new cars, for correcting driver’s mistakes, is actually a learning curve to becoming a truly good driver.

Many drivers in a new Porsche, fully equipped with all of the nanny controls, will become fast drivers, quickly going from Point A to B.  This is the challenging part for the instructors because some drivers don’t understand that going fast is not the only goal.   We want to teach the students the proper driving line, when to turn into a corner, how to be smooth on the throttle and to be aware of all of their surroundings – the track, the other cars, the flags, etc.   As the students learn how to drive their cars at speed on the track, they are also learning the terminology – track out, apex, push etc.   Seat time is key to becoming a good driver.  Being a fast driver doesn’t mean you are a good driver.

All Porsches are awesome (old or new) and I hope you are having just as much fun out there on track as I have, each and every time.

A big ‘thank you’ to Michelle Masino for taking pictures at the event. Many drivers were sent a picture (or multiple pictures) of their car – some in the paddock, some lined up on Pit Lane, some on the track. All of the pictures in this article were taken by Michelle.

See you at the track.

Dave
